The Area
The Gironde is the largest 'département' in France. Situated in the south west of the country, part of Aquitaine. It has a long coastline and 2 major rivers. The Gironde is bordered to the north by the Dordogne and the Garonne, which rises west of Carcassonne runs through the Gironde and to the Atlantic beyond Bordeaux.
Listrac de Dureze is a small village situated on the side of the Dureze valley nestled in the midst of the wine-growing region of Entre deux Mers. The wonderful town of St Emilion is a short distance away, world famous for its wine and an official UNESCO world heritage site.
We are about 15 kilometres from Castillon la Bataille; an old town on the Dordogne, where the French won the last battle of the 100 years war and Ste Foy la Grande, also on the Dordogne is a similar distance. The beautiful old town of Bergerac is less than an hour away.
There are many interesting and attractive 'bastide' villages, such as Pellegrue, Monsegur and Sauveterre, within easy travelling distance and many local markets to visit. There are a number of Châteaux / wineries offering wine tasting and direct sales.
The beautiful city of Bordeaux can be reached easily by car or train within an hour and makes an interesting contrast to the tranquillity of the countryside.
The area is rich in culture and history and a fascinating part of France. We are ideally situated as a base for relaxing, exploring and, of course, sampling the wine and food. The house is set amidst trees on the edge of the village and is a calm and peaceful place for those seeking an escape from the rush of modern life.
Listrac de Dureze is just an hour away from the airports of Bordeaux and Bergerac. We are also an ideal stopping off point for travellers going to Spain or the south coast of France.
